Just bought a Katadyn Vario water purifier

Well I've started my survival prep phase and I have a few questions.

I just bought a Katadyn Vario water purifier. At this point my plan is to simply have it on hand and keep with the other supplies I plan on buying. I bought 2 replacement filters, 2 replacement charcoal packs, and 1 replacement ceramic filter. I figured this would cover any water purification needs for a good long time.

Should any special storage considerations be taken into account? Can/Will this unit give me problems if I simply store it on my shelf until I need it?

I also bought a crank/solar radio with built in LED light and a 100 piece first aid kit. Moving on to food next.

Thanks

I dunno about the water purifier, but for me, it would make sense to get it into service and make sure you're not storing something that doesn't work on a shelf. Crank/solar radios are good, unless they're cheap. Usually the storage cells on the cheap ones will fail within months.

for first aid, try and get raw materials as well as pre-wrapped bandaids. A sheet of gauze can be trimmed to need. Hard to go the other way. But the pre-wrapped have their place, and the small form means you don't need to expose a large sheet to contamination. Don't overlook a roll of duct tape in there too.

Thanks for the input! You're right...I should test it out just to make sure it's in proper working order. So do you think there are any special storage needs? I planned on keeping it in my basement on a shelf. Should I be worried about moisture or anything like that damaging it?

Radio was about $50 and most highly recommended on the site for my price range. Tested it out and it worked so I'm happy.

Oddly enough the first aid kit came with 2 rolls of gauze and 1 roll of duct tape. Also contains antiseptics, band aids, flashlight...etc. Need to take inventory and figure out what else I might need.

I also feel I should get a compass...not one of the digital ones either...good old fashion one. Also, I plan on getting detailed maps for the area. Might come in handy.

Thanks

The best piece of advice is

JUST START...........AS YOU CONTINUE DOWN THE ROAD OF PREPPING YOU WILL GET BETTER AT IT.

Every week when I get paid I run the gaunlet:

Candles (in glass)

Batteries (lithuim is best)

Crazy glue (great fix it item)

Natural soaps and deorderants ( like the good stuff and this is my personal preference)

Mouse traps and roach spray.(keep prep area secure)

Olive oil (Cold pressed in glass ,very good to have around the uses are too many to name)

Toilet paper (99 cent store kind as it is pleantiful)

Hygiene products (Male/female)

Sea Salt and Baking soda ( million of uses and make a great toothpaste)

Canned goods (spam,tuna,beans etc....)

I dont pick all these items up every single week mind you but rest assured I get three or four faithfully.

Commit to a similar regime more suited to your tastes and before you know it........Ya got yourself a sizeable stash in no time flat.

Bottomline: As long as you are swaping dollars for tangible items you are head and shoulders above the rest.

Have at it Baby.:ok:

Nice bit of kit there, J-son. I'd hate to see the arms of someone after pumping 13,000 gallons through it tho;)

Um, Is that 13,000 gallons for the life of the unit, or per filter?
